Childhood Food Memories and Church

A 1938 food feast (Photo courtesy of the U. S. National Archive Collection)
As a child growing up in south in the 1930s and 1940s one ate allot of great food in churches. Fried chicken, corn bread, greens, and cakes and pies. Historically southern churches served as both a spiritual filling station and a quasi- community eatery. In addition to church membership, churches included a tradition of important yearly programs with free food on holidays and other special occasions, not mention a cook book produced every couple of decades. Many grew up associating church with great food.
