The Afro Peruvian artist Pancho Fierro provides insights
into 19th century Peruvian food markets. Born in 1807, Fierro spent his entire life
in Lima where he worked in obscurity as a painter. He remained illiterate and
earned a meager living painting advertisements, street signs, and making furniture. 250
works of art, the majority of which he did not sign are credit to him based on his
distinctive style. Until his death in 1879 at the age of 71, much of his
painting, as illustrated above, are about the food markets of Lima (Note: Many thanks to researcher Victor Achar)
